What they do

  • Establish infant feeding/sleep routines, diapering, swaddling, soothing
  • Overnight care so parents can sleep
  • Educate parents on newborn cues, safe sleep, pumping/formula best practices
  • Light baby-related tasks: bottle sanitizing, baby laundry, nursery organization
  • Postpartum recovery support for parents (emotional support, resources)

Typical setting

  • In-home for the first 12–16 weeks (sometimes longer)
  • Night shifts, 8–12 hours; some day support for coaching

Qualifications

  • NCS training/certifications (various reputable programs)
  • CPR/First Aid (infant)
  • IBCLC for clinical lactation support (if applicable)
  • Vaccinations often requested (Tdap, flu)

Scope & boundaries

  • Not a medical provider unless licensed; cannot diagnose or treat
  • “Night nurse” title can be regulated—use accurate titles
